Ah, love in the time of COVID-19…
Hi friends! This week, I’ve been thinking a lot about the way wedding trends have evolved over the course of this year… for the better. Now, I don’t deny how heartbreaking it can be to postpone the perfect wedding day you have planned or how challenging it can be to celebrate while adhering to social distancing guidelines. But I do think there’s something to be said about the magical intimacy of the “minimonies” I’ve photographed this year.
What is a minimony?
A minimony, or a miniature ceremony, is a beautiful commitment ceremony between you and your partner that you share with up to 10 close loved ones. It allows you to honor your chosen wedding date in a way that celebrates your love and keeps your family and friends safe. Meanwhile, you still get to have a “sequel wedding,” or the big bash for everyone on your original guest list, when the world has settled down a bit. It’s the best-of-both-worlds 2020 wedding solution, and I love watching the joy it’s bringing to my couples!
What does a minimony look like?
Just like any wedding, it depends on the couple. But in many cases, I see deeply touching handwritten vows, a scaled-down cocktail hour with yummy light bites and sentimental toasts, understated floral touches that are both sweet and beautiful, and even a miniature version of the wedding cake the couple plans to have again at their bigger celebration. You can really make a minimony as simple or as elaborate as your heart desires!
Why do I love the idea?
One common thread that exists through all of these miniature ceremonies, though, is the genuine sense of connection you can feel among everyone in attendance. Everyone feels a bit more focused, a bit more present, and a bit more grateful as they experience the couple’s declaration of devotion to one another. It’s so difficult to describe in words, but the feeling gives me instant goosebumps! It’s a glimmer of hope and joy during tough times, and it’s beyond powerful.
