Wedding cakes are seriously one of my favorite. They are one of my favorites to look at. They are one of my favorites to photograph. And, they are definitely one of my favorites to eat! Yes- two pieces, please. So, what about a Groom’s Cake??
Warning – do not read this post if you are hungry. Today I want to share another tradition I get questions about a lot and one that I love – it is that of the Groom’s cake. For many, it may seem like one of those Pinterest-driven wedding trends but it is actually a tradition began in England hundreds of years ago. Yay for tradition!
The tradition started as a way to give wedding guest a second option for dessert at the wedding reception, while the wedding cake was usually white and light, the grooms cake was a dense fruitcake.
The tradition traveled over to the southeastern U.S. where it has come in and out of popularity in southern weddings. Nowadays groom’s cakes are served and reflect the grooms’ personality – elaborately decorated cakes in the shape of a football helmet, a yeti cooler, or even a log cake that has actual plaid cake on the inside. The cakes are usually darker and denser with flavors like chocolate, caramel, and Grand Marnier. {Ummmm, yes please!!} Groom’s Cakes can stray from the typical cake and be served in the form of pie, cupcakes, cake pops, moose, or a number of other dessert type foods.
Groom’s Cake can be served at the wedding rehearsal dinner or alongside the wedding cake at your reception. And, can be as unique and cool as that special man in your life. ❤️
